OIEx Secures Ohio Third Frontier Research Incentive Funding

Higher education-driven, state government-sponsored, and industry-sought, OIEx is promoting collaborative research at Ohio’s institutions of higher education by providing access to the academic talent and resources for the State’s industry, commerce and business development. The increasing visibility of OIEx as a statewide resource calls for the need to accelerate developmental enhancements to the portal and its supporting human network of professionals.  A proposal submitted by Tim Cain (Ohio University) and Rajiv Ramnath (Ohio State University) entitled: "Accelerating System Capabilities of the Ohio Innovation Exchange to Advance Discovery, Bolster Commerce, and Catalyze Connections." garnered funding from the Ohio Third Frontier.  Detailed therein are strategies and solutions that once implemented will: (I) improve the OIEx Web experience; (II) grow participating university awareness, adoption, and support by leveraging academic libraries and; (III) increase Ohio industry awareness and use of OIEx.   Meeting these challenges will enable OIEx to meet its goals of advancing discovery, bolstering State commerce, and catalyzing connections.

The Ohio Innovation Exchange (OIEx) is an initiative of the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) built on the technologies licensed from Digital Science and Research Solutions, Inc. a technology company serving the needs of scientific and research communities at key points along the full cycle of research.  OIEx was originally developed by four Ohio universities with industry support from the Ohio Manufacturing Institute. OIEx is now a publicly available platform that, in its current phase, provides industry in search of expertise with free access to more than 8,250 faculty members and 900 resources from the following universities:

  • Case Western Reserve University

From research partnerships, intellectual property, and technology licensing opportunities to business development and even student internships, OIEx brings those connections to bear, and the scope of OIEx will expand further as other institutions join.

It is critical to our state’s economy that we utilize every aspect of our knowledge and innovation talent across the public and private sectors” said ODHE Chancellor John Carey. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created with OIEx - better connecting the experts and resources at our state research universities to the industries that can utilize them to push their breakthrough ideas to fruition.”
